Senator Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao vowed to end squatting if he becomes President.

He pledged to build subdivisions and buildings for squatters.

"No one will live in a squatter (area) especially in Metro Manila," the boxing champ said in a virtual interview with broadcaster Anthony Taberna in his YouTube channel "Tune in with TUNYING" on Sunday evening.

He said that he knew how it is to be poor. "I slept in streets. I experienced hunger. Rich people avoided me because I smelled bad," he said in Filipino.

Pacquiao added that he wants Filipinos to remember him not as a boxing champion but as someone who loved the country.

"I want to be an inspiration. That's the legacy I want to leave to the people," he said.

Pacquiao is in General Santos City training for his fight with American Errol Spence Jr. in August.

The senator said that he will decide what post to seek in October, the deadline of submitting certificates of candidacy.

Another problem he said he wants to solve is corruption.

"I will eradicate corruption in government offices," he said. "Why are we poor? It is because of corruption."

Last week, President Rodrigo Duterte chided Pacquiao for criticizing his stance on China. The President told the senator to study.

But Pacquiao said speaking English is not a measure of intelligence. What is important, he stressed, is love of country.
