President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday urged Filipinos to follow the examples of Philippine heroes as the country battles the COVID-19 pandemic.
Duterte made the statement in a video message aired after the flag- and wreath-laying ceremony held in celebration of the 123rd anniversary of Philippine independence in Manila's Luneta Park (Rizal Park) on Saturday.
“The challenges of the past years have tested our character as a nation. Each of us have been called upon to be heroes in our own rights in fighting for our survival and devoting ourselves to the common good just as our heroes did more than a century ago,” the president said.
“With their noble example, inspiring us we look forward to a brighter future filled with hope that we will overcome the challenges brought by this pandemic. May the patriotic fervor continue to burn in our hearts. Mabuhay ang malayang Pilipinas,” he added.
Duterte was set to attend in person at the commemoration of the Philippine independence this afternoon.
Since he assumed the presidency in 2016, this will be Duterte's second time to be physically present in Independence Day rites.
Apart from the Independence Day program in Rizal Park, simultaneous flag raising, and wreath-laying ceremonies were also held at the following historical sites and shrines:
Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite; Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan; Museo ng Katipunan at the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan City; Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City; Museo ng Kasaysayang Panlipunan ng Pilipinas in Angeles, Pampanga; Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revoluccion at the Manila North Cemetery in Manila; Rizal Park in Davao City; Plaza Independencia in Cebu City; and Liberty Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu
